Leo Carrillo, Malibu
Leo Carrillo is a state park with many different dive spots with amazing kelp forests, reefs that are full of life, and incredible views.
The park gates open at 8am and close at 10pm. It's recommended to get there right when the gates open if you plan on a morning dive. You do have to pay for parking ($12 all day, $9 for 3hrs, $6 for 2hrs, $3 for 1hr). Make your way down the beach access road where you will find parking at the north end by the beach entry.
If you have moderate to high experience with surf entry, this is the dive site for you!
This dive site is a surf entry with waves ranging from 0.5ft-6ft. The six feet waves tend to be a result of a big swell. The waves are typically 1-3ft on average. Make sure to check the conditions the day before to make sure you’re comfortable before planning your trip.
There are three main reefs at this site. One at Staircase Beach, one at North Beach, and one at the beginning of the parking lot. These reefs include rocky structures, kelp forests and sandy plains. The depth at this dive site tends to be around 20-25ft depending on the tide.
The numerous species of algae, fish, crabs, and sharks, made these reefs their home. You’ll see nudibranchs, horn sharks, leopard sharks, sheepshead fish, garibaldi, spider crabs, octopuses, sea urchins, rockfish, scallops, starfish, sea anemones, lobsters, gorgonians, and more!
