AWARE Fish Identification Diver
“What was that fish?” is a common question heard after a dive. If you want to be the scuba diver with the answers, instead of the one asking the questions, then take the AWARE – Fish Identification Specialty course! You’ll enjoy dives even more when you recognize the creatures that you see and can identify the main fish families and their characteristics. During the two scuba dives, you’ll learn:
- How to identify characteristics of local fish families and species
- Fish survey techniques and strategies
- About Project AWARE activities that can help protect aquatic life
Schedule
In order to finish this course, there are 4 dives you’ll need to complete. If you’ve already achieved your Advanced Open Water Diver with Deep Blue, you’ll only need to do three (as you did the first one during AOW). If you only need to do 3 dives we can typically do them in one day. If you need all 4, the course will be spread out over 2 days. While it is possible to do all the dives from the beach, most people prefer to complete this course over at Catalina Island.
Make sure you check our DB Scuba calendar to find out when we're next running this course. Let us know if you are interested but don't see it on the calendar.
Price
The price of the course is $175. This includes materials (including a Reef.org starter kit), instruction, certification, and our full rental package (BCD, regulator w/computer, wetsuit, hood, tanks, and weights). If you already have your Adventures in Diving book - the book used during your Advanced Certification, we will remove that part of the cost. You will want a slate to record what you see; while a student you can purchase this at 10% off in our shop. Boat tickets are not included, but highly recommended.
This specialty course also counts towards your Master Scuba Diver Rating! Want to read more about other specialties we can offer you? Here they are!
