Jacquie & Jonathan - Owners

As the proud owners of Deep Blue, Jacquie and Jonathan bring their passion to their business. Their Long Beach roots go back four generations and they are proud to foster a new generation of swimmers and scuba divers. As parents of two young children, the swim school is critical to promote water safety for all ages and Deep Blue opens the door to further aquatic journeys. Jacquie's love of water, adventure and all things family makes a perfect "family feel" recipe at Deep Blue. After spending nearly 15 years working in Labor Relations at the port areas of the West Coast, Jacquie used her business degree and background to open Deep Blue.

Jonathan has had an interesting career in diving. He started his diving adventures at the age of 18 as a U.S. Navy Deep Sea Diver and traveled the world in that capacity with many interesting diving missions. Jonathan became a PADI Instructor in 1989 and has enjoyed sharing his enthusiasm with his students throughout the years. Jonathan also spent over 10 years as a public safety diver conducting searches, recoveries, and underwater crime scene investigations. Jonathan led a specialized public safety dive team with a unique Homeland Security mission. He also had the privilege of being one of a select handful of original Long Beach Aquarium of the Pacific divers. More recently, he has pursued his interest in rebreather diving and has found an even more amazing way to interact with the aquatic world.

Scott works with infants, children, and adults of all ages and abilities.  His favorite part about teaching swim lessons is having fun and watching his students gain confidence in the water. Scott has a special ability to relate with children and help them overcome any fears they may have during their lessons. Scott is also a scuba instructor and specializes in teaching scuba to children and teenagers.

Scott is the Director of the swim school at Deep Blue and became an instructor while employed here. Matt Scuba Instructor Deep Blue

Matt - Scuba Manager + Scuba Instructor

On one of Matt’s family's kayaking trips to the Florida Keys he paddled out to a small island off Key Largo, parked everything on a beach, donned snorkeling gear, and proceeded to snorkel around it. Becoming so entranced by what he was seeing under the surface he failed to circle and instead swam a straight line, only looking up when it was getting too deep to see what was beneath him.  His family was hundreds of yards away, waving and yelling to get his attention – so he waved back. He then put his face back down into that brave new world and kicked towards them, completely unaware (as only an 8-year old can be), that there was any cause for concern.

Since then, whenever possible, Matt’s been in the water. He got his Open Water certification while in Australia back in 2001, spent (too little) time in the Galapagos Islands, got his Advanced Open Water in the Caribbean, and has spent his last few years braving the mysterious waters of southern California.  He’s trained with numerous agencies and in numerous specialties, obtaining his Master Scuba Diver rating before deciding to go Pro and become a Divemaster, then Open Water Scuba Instructor. As the Scuba Manager at Deep Blue he gets to dive whenever he wants but enjoys giving other people opportunities to dive almost as much!  Almost…

- Open Water Scuba Instructor

Josh - Repair Manager + Scuba Instructor

Josh Taylor is originally from Cornwall,England. He started scuba diving in the cold waters of Plymouth, England. After serving almost 6 years in the military he decided to hang up his boots and trade them in for fins. Josh headed to Thailand to continue his education and passion for scuba diving in the beautifully warm waters of Koh Tao. He began working as an instructor on the small island where he also discovered his love for technical diving. Josh then met his fiance and they moved to the west side of Thailand, working and living full time on a live-aboard in the Andaman Islands. After a few years in Thailand he moved to the U.S. to be with his fiance as well as to experience another world of diving and carry on his education - taking on a new role as Deep Blue's Repair Lead.

-Master Scuba Diver Trainer

Jessie - Scuba Associate

Jessie started diving in 2012 while pursuing Marine Biology at CSULB. She dove right into scuba attaining her advanced and rescue with PADI and continuing on to her scientific diver certification with AAUS. With this certification she has been able to participate in research dives ranging from ocean acidification effects on algae in Moorea to dispersal patterns of elasmobranchs in Catalina.

After receiving her bachelors, Jessie worked as an aquarist caring for several local species of fish, inverts, and algae at the California Science Center. From there she moved on to caring for sharks and tropical species of fish in Las Vegas, Nevada. While living in the desert, Jessie missed the ocean and decided to move back to Long Beach to pursue a career in scuba and joined our Deep Blue team.

Sam - Scuba Associate

Hailing from Jonesboro Arkansas, Sam started diving at the age of thirteen. By the time he was 18, he was working as a Divemaster in the British Virgin Islands. He is a lover of marine biology with a special emphasis on the little guys - plankton. If you see him staring off into space on a dive, do not worry: he’s looking at some fascinating speck of life floating in front of his mask. Want to know why he’s so fascinated by plankton? Ask! A jolly fellow, Sam is thrilled to have joined the Deep Blue team – usually focusing on service and repairs but occasionally you’ll find him out and about in the store as well.

-Master Scuba Diver Trainer

Eric - Scuba Instructor

Eric - Scuba Instructor

Eric started diving because his wife and some friends of were going on a cruise. So in June of 2003, he got scuba certified. After the cruise and some great diving; he was hooked! He started taking more and more classes. He had to figure out how to get to dive for free - so in 2004 he became a Divemaster.  Shortly thereafter, he became a PADI instructor and has been actively teaching ever since! He likes to teach young people (or young at heart) the most; it's that look in their eyes after the first open water dive when they've seen something cool that he loves the most.

When not teaching he spends a lot of time with his family; he has two kids that swim like fish and love the water.

-IDC Staff Instructor

John - Scuba Instructor

John - Scuba Instructor

You can’t beat experience, and John's got it!

He has nearly 40 years under his weight belt, and has logged about one thousand dives per decade. John has been a certified and active Divemaster almost all that time. He’s been a PADI Instructor for 27yrs and Course Director (Instructor-Trainer) for 17. So in that time he has had the pleasure of working with students from teens to octogenarians, and from construction workers to folk in the entertainment industry. John has issued around fourteen hundred certifications in subjects ranging from wreck and underwater photography to marine life identification and search-and-rescue.

John has worked and dived all-over the world, sometimes working with notable underwater photographers and sometimes with Jacques and his son, Jean-Michel Cousteau. In addition he has become very familiar with beach dives from Monterey to Ensenada and has been tuned in to the ever-changing history of the Southern California charter dive boat industry.

So come on down, take a break from your everyday pressures and learn or dive in our low stress environment. Fun and relaxing – that’s my goal!

-Course Director

Kevin - Scuba Instructor

Kevin's love for the ocean started when he watched Jacques Cousteau’s Underwater World. By the time he was 6 he knew more about the ocean and its creatures than most adults. His father was a police diver in Seattle and sometimes he’d get to go to work with him and see him decked out in SCUBA gear. He’d jump into the water and would be gone for an hour, and he’d always come back with something so cool. That’s when Kevin knew he wanted to be a diver. At 17, he completed his PADI Open Water Diver cert and spent all of his time diving in the chilly waters of Puget Sound. He took a bit of a break from diving, but in 2010 he came back to it here in Southern California. After completing his Rescue Diver cert with Deep Blue he knew he wanted to go pro. He's very happy that he's been given the opportunity to share with others the joy of being in a new kind of wilderness - a wilderness that many people don’t get to see.
